Parkside Family Counseling, LLC
2017 Annual Report
As the needs of the Lenawee County community grow, so does Parkside Family Counseling, LLC! We had hardly completed the ADA-compliant 2016 addition on our building when we once again found all of our therapy and group meeting rooms booked in the afternoon hours. The Collins family, our long-time neighbors on McKenzie, decided to downsize and rather than place their home on the market they offered it to Parkside in a private sale. The purchase was completed during the summer and renovations (such as a second story fire escape) were completed this fall. The Collins house expands our office space, group meeting space, and contributes four additional therapy rooms. Each of the rooms is named after a county in Ireland in appreciation for the Collins family.
Our growth has necessitated the hiring of more clinical staff. We have been lucky to partner with some remarkable counselors and social workers with a variety of backgrounds and experience. We encourage you to click on the “About Us” tab and become familiar with our new staff. All of our staff are master’s level therapists and licensed in the State of Michigan.
Our Advisory Board has undergone some changes this year along with some changes in our office staff. Our office manager, Jolene, was offered a position which advanced her career goals. Parkside asked Kathleen Wilson, a board member for the last three years, if she would consider working for us as our Practice Manager. We are fortunate to have Kathleen here on a daily basis. Her education as a Certified Management Accountant and long history with a large medical group has afforded us many opportunities to improve our financial procedures and management practices. Deb Risner, recently retired Principal of Michener Elementary School, has joined our Advisory Board. We welcome Deb and look forward to her participation as a member of the Parkside Community.
Fall 2017 provided Parkside Family Counseling and the Lenawee Probate Court, Juvenile Division, an opportunity to team up and bring additional grant monies to Lenawee County via the Community Mental Health Partnership of Southeast Michigan. Many of the youth we serve at Parkside who have come to the attention of the Court could use additional counseling and skill building groups to assist them with their substance use recovery efforts. The added financial resources allow us to provide services at little to no cost to the participants, allowing more people to experience success and brighter futures!
Youth need interesting and challenging projects and activities to keep them motivated and invested in living drug free lives. During the summer of 2017 some of our youth and their counselors launched a lending library project (christened the “book, share, build” project) which was quite successful. The youth solicited donations of wood, hardware, and Plexiglas from the local hardware stores. They had help from a Lions’ club member who cut all the pieces for the little library boxes. Once they had a prototype assembled they pre-sold additional boxes to area businesses and collected donated books to fill the lending libraries. The group members asked the purchasing businesses how they would like the boxes finished and then proceeded to design and paint the boxes. AB Construction donated their time and abilities to get the boxes installed. If you would like to borrow or share a book, stop by Parkside and see our box installed next to the driveway on Maumee.
For 2018 we are looking forward to preparing for our 2019 re-credentialing process with the Council on Accreditation (COA). COA is a rigorous process which will require the update of Parkside’s strategic plan, review and revision of policy and procedures, and implementation of even more robust methods for tracking outcomes. We will be calling on our stakeholders to give us feedback throughout the process so do not be surprised if you receive additional communication from us this year. Your participation in our credentialing journey is so very much appreciated. It helps Parkside measure and respond to the needs of our community in a timely manner and is in keeping with our Mission to be community-based.
