Annual Report 2018
Summarizing a year at Parkside in a few paragraphs has always been a bit of a challenge. Parkside is a dynamic place and fitting all the good into one communication is always a challenge. This year you may find that you, our stakeholders, will receive several communications. We plan to expand the documents and feedback we share with you via our website and we plan to continue to use social media to keep you up to date on events and offerings in a more immediate manner.
2018 presented new opportunities for Parkside to participate with community partners to provide more assistance, education, and support to our community. Working together to provide an array of services is both efficient and rewarding. This year Parkside’s Substance Use Disorder Program expanded to include work with the Lenawee County Drug Court providing assessments, therapy, group support and case management services to community members attempting to live a sober and productive life in their community. This partnership has been very rewarding and reminds each of us that providing treatment and support, whenever appropriate, is superior to incarceration.
In 2018 we were invited in to Adrian Schools to provide a drug education class to middle school students. Our youth are keenly aware of the substance use that surrounds them but also lacking in understanding of how some of the substances available today are both toxic and often deadly. Parkside therapist Kat Hancock enjoyed being able to share knowledge with the youth and answer their questions. Their feedback about the class was overwhelmingly positive and we hope to have more opportunities just like this one.
Other programs in the community are more focused on family dynamics and helping parents and their children to communicate well and live harmonious family lives. The Strengthening Families Program, a joint offering between Lenawee Community Mental Health, the Department of Health & Human Services, Lenawee County Probate Court Juvenile Division, Lenawee County Drug Treatment Court, Boys & Girls Club of Lenawee, Catholic Charities and Parkside Family Counseling was developed, planned and funded in late 2018. Our first seven week series has launched with Parkside contributing two trained facilitators.
